Socorro:Legal Services for Immigrant Women and Children |
|
Socorro's Program strategiesLegal Representation Socorro's Managing Attorney will provide legal representation to abused immigrant women, abandoned or abused immigrant children, and victims of human trafficking in all matters related to immigration. This representation will entail seeking immigration benefits from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration Judges in the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), the Administrative Appeals Unit (AAU), Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), and federal court. Legal representation will not include assistance or participation in the prosecution of those individuals responsible for the abuse, abandonment, or trafficking. Education, Outreach and Advocacy Socorro's priority under this strategy is to provide outreach, information and educational materials to members of the immigrant community through "know your rights" legal workshops. However, educational workshops will also target women's or children's advocates, immigrant organizations, legal aid organizations, attorneys, justice system personnel. Socorro will provide, in both English and Spanish (and eventually in other languages as well), educational materials, and informational workshops. These workshops will be presented by attorneys, and will not involve any unlawful practice of law. Participants will be informed verbally and in writing that they are not being represented by the attorneys offering the workshop. Research and Database development Socorro is seeking funding to research ways to further assist immigrant women and children victims of human trafficking, abandoned and abused children, immigrants seeking asylum, and battered immigrant women. Socorro plans to create and maintain an informational database of organizations in Colorado that provide services in Spanish, and other non-English languages, to battered immigrant women, women and children victims of human trafficking, immigrant children facing legal proceedings, and individuals seeking asylum. |
